BOSTON– The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has named Sylvia Trent-Adams as its next President and CEO, effective July 14. A longtime public health leader, Dr. Trent-Adams brings more than three decades of experience in government, academia, and health systems leadership.

Trent-Adams previously served as Acting Surgeon General, Deputy Surgeon General, and most recently as President of the University of North Texas Health Science Center. During her time at UNT, the university secured a record $150 million grant for Alzheimer’s research and launched a new College of Nursing.

She will take over from Interim CEO Melissa Panagides-Busch, who has led IHI since former President and CEO Dr. Kedar Mate stepped down in December 2024.

“I’m honored to join IHI at a time when health care systems around the world are seeking change,” said Trent-Adams. “This organization is known globally for its work in quality improvement, safety, and health equity. I look forward to helping lead its next chapter.”

Trent-Adams has also served in the U.S. Army and Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, where she helped shape national health policy and led major public health responses, including the U.S. Ebola effort in Liberia and global HIV/AIDS initiatives.

“Sylvia’s leadership record speaks for itself,” said IHI Board Chair Dr. Gerald Hickson. “She combines clinical experience, public health expertise, and a strong commitment to equity. She’s been a valuable member of IHI’s board, and we’re excited to see her step into this new role.”

Her appointment comes as IHI continues efforts to support health systems worldwide in improving care outcomes and addressing persistent disparities.
