KANSAS CITY, Mo.– The Civic Council of Greater Kansas City today announced the appointment of Dr. Dred Scott to the position of President of the Civic Council, effective August 1, 2022.

“I am proud to be joining the Civic Council, an organization keenly focused on fostering positive progress in the Kansas City region,” stated Dr. Scott. “From education to life sciences, to workforce and economic development, the Civic Council has made an indelible impact across sectors and our region since its founding. Partnering with civic and business leaders, I look forward to leading the Civic Council into its next chapter as we come together to address historical challenges and identify unique opportunities to allow us to fully thrive as a region, now and for generations to come.”

Dr. Scott previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer at Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, a position he assumed in 2018.

The selection of Dr. Scott followed a robust national search. Madeleine McDonough, Chair of the Civic Council and Chair of Shook, Hardy & Bacon, commented, “The Committee undertook an extensive national search process, interviewing an impressive slate of candidates. Dr. Scott’s leadership qualities immediately stood out. He demonstrates an innate ability to recognize disparities, build consensus and implement practical solutions. We are confident that Dr. Scott’s hopeful vision for Kansas City will further the Civic Council’s ability to address complex economic challenges in our region and help ensure inclusive prosperity.”

Before Boys & Girls Clubs, Dr. Scott held many positions in education, including as an educator, principal and executive director of support services in both the Raytown and Independence school districts, as well as Deputy Superintendent for the Independence, Missouri, School District.

“Dr. Scott is committed to the Civic Council’s mission and shares our interest in making Kansas City a more vibrant community for all. His passion for and knowledge of our city, combined with his track record of strategic and collaborative leadership makes him an ideal leader for the Civic Council,” said Don Hall, Jr., Civic Council Board Member and Executive Chairman of Hallmark Cards.

In addition, Dr. Scott has held positions on numerous boards aimed at making a difference in the community, including University Health, Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Health Forward Foundation, Swope Health Services, and many others. A native of Kansas City, Dr. Scott holds an undergraduate degree from Missouri State University, a Master of Science from University of Central Missouri and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Baker University.

“As a KC-native, Dr. Scott has a deep understanding of Kansas City’s history, its challenges, and its opportunities,” said Bill Gautreaux, Civic Council Board Member and Managing Partner of MLP Holdings LLC. “That local experience, combined with Dred’s innovative thinking and our own research efforts, will help move the Civic Council forward. From KC Rising’s focus on regional prosperity for all and our commitment to align our region’s business leaders and local government around greater access and opportunity, I am excited for the Civic Council and the future impact of Dr. Scott’s leadership in the Kansas City region.”
