MINNEAPOLIS– Intellectual property law firm Fish & Richardson is pleased to welcome seasoned litigators Louis Fogel, Ph.D., and Shaun Van Horn. The pair, who are based in Chicago, join Fish’s Litigation Group and are members of the Life Sciences Industry Team.

“Louis and Shaun have an impressive record and deep market knowledge in life sciences litigation,” said Global Head of Litigation Corrin Drakulich. “Their practices fit perfectly with Fish’s life sciences platform and they will add to the depth of talent we are able to offer our clients in life sciences litigation.”

Fogel and Van Horn were most recently partners at Jenner & Block LLP, where Fogel was a co-chair of Jenner’s Life Sciences Practice. Fogel’s 20-plus-year career has focused on brand-side Hatch-Waxman disputes and biosimilar litigation and counseling, as well as medical device litigation, IP antitrust, and trade secrets issues. He spent the last 10 years leading sophisticated, high-stakes litigation and has particular expertise in medical devices, recombinant DNA technology, and biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Fogel is also a registered patent attorney. Fogel holds a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago, building on Fish’s legacy of combining legal savvy with technical expertise.

“Fish has been a dominant force in life sciences litigation for decades, and I’m thrilled to join this distinguished group,” said Fogel. “In addition to bringing creative and practical solutions to complex disputes, I’m eager to join a firm at the forefront of the ever-changing life sciences landscape.”

Van Horn’s practice focuses on patent litigation for biosimilars companies and other biotech innovators, as well as counseling on IP-related antitrust issues. He has a strong background managing federal court litigations and often handles cross-border IP disputes. Van Horn’s technical expertise lies in molecular biology, recombinant technology, cell line development, and protein dynamics. A thought leader in the IP antitrust space, he co-authored a book on the subject, “Antitrust Issues in Intellectual Property Law,” with the American Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Law Section. Van Horn holds a B.S. in biochemistry and he received his J.D. from New York University School of Law.

“Fish’s forward-thinking, geographic reach across venues and jurisdictions, and deep technical bench aligns with the needs of today’s innovative life science companies,” said Van Horn. “I’m excited to leverage my trial experience to support Fish clients, especially in high-stakes life sciences cases.”

“We have worked as co-counsel with Louis and Shaun for years and we know they are at the top of their field in life sciences litigation,” said Fish President & CEO John Adkisson. “In addition, they are outstanding cultural fits with our firm. I am thrilled they are joining Fish and adding to the firm’s already impressive depth and track record in life sciences litigation.”

Fish’s Life Sciences Industry Team represents every sector of the life sciences and provides strategic and forward-thinking counsel to clients to minimize risk, protect clients’ innovative assets, and strengthen clients’ competitive edge in the market. In addition to Fogel and Van Horn, former Administrative Patent Judge and Associate Solicitor Kristi L.R. Sawert, Ph.D., also joined the team earlier this year.
