BOSTON — AcuityMD, a leading MedTech intelligence platform, has expanded its Care Journeys solution with a new feature designed to help medical device companies and healthcare providers connect patients with cutting-edge treatments more effectively. The enhanced platform, called Referral Pathways, offers comprehensive insights into physician referral networks, giving commercial teams the tools to identify key healthcare providers who can benefit from their innovations and improve patient access to advanced medical technologies.

The addition of Referral Pathways strengthens AcuityMD’s Care Journeys platform, which launched in October 2024 to help MedTech companies demonstrate how their products improve clinical and financial outcomes for patients with complex diagnoses. The latest upgrade introduces data-driven visualizations that map out entire referral networks, allowing MedTech teams to connect upstream physicians—who make initial diagnoses—with specialists offering the latest therapies.

“Referral Pathways takes MedTech commercialization to the next level,” said Megan Wilson, director of product management at AcuityMD. “It helps companies not only identify clinical opportunities but also uncover strategic referral connections that can ensure more patients access the best available treatments.”

The expansion addresses a growing challenge in the healthcare system: the disconnect between rapid technological advances in medical devices and the ability of overburdened physicians to stay current. According to a 2024 survey, 80% of physicians report feeling overworked amid rising patient complexity and ongoing provider shortages. Meanwhile, the MedTech industry continues to grow rapidly, expected to reach $800 billion by 2030, driven by advances in AI, robotics, and digital health.

This rapid pace of innovation often leaves healthcare providers with limited time to learn about new therapies or identify local specialists offering them. While MedTech companies have traditionally hosted educational events to bridge this gap, gaps in referral data remain, making it difficult to track all physicians involved in a patient’s care journey.

AcuityMD’s Referral Pathways aims to fill these gaps by providing a full view of the referral landscape, tracking patient pathways beyond their most recent encounters and identifying upstream providers who influence treatment decisions.

One early adopter, Teleflex Incorporated, is leveraging Care Journeys and Referral Pathways to boost adoption of its UroLift™ System, a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. “Over 14 million men in the U.S. live with BPH symptoms, but only about 3% choose surgical intervention,” said Anthony Parrillo, global vice president of marketing at Teleflex. “Referral Pathways helps us pinpoint the healthcare providers most frequently diagnosing BPH in specific markets and raise their awareness of the UroLift System. This targeted approach maximizes our ability to connect patients with effective, minimally invasive care.”

By offering a clearer view of referral dynamics, AcuityMD aims to help MedTech companies accelerate product adoption and ensure patients receive the most innovative treatments available.
