Leaders from Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation visit MEDITECH to kick off their implementation of Expanse

CANTON, Mass.Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation (CHCC) has announced its implementation of MEDITECH Expanse, a modern electronic health record (EHR) platform designed to improve patient care and streamline health information sharing across Saipan and the islands of Tinian and Rota.

With this rollout, CHCC aims to connect its hospital and health centers through a unified EHR system that provides a single, comprehensive patient record. The move is expected to enhance clinical decision-making, reduce inefficiencies, and deliver more consistent, coordinated care throughout the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Expanse’s mobile capabilities will allow clinicians to access and document patient information in real time, improving the quality of interactions and allowing more time for direct patient care. The system enables instant access to essential health data—such as test results, allergies, and diagnoses—across all facilities and care teams, regardless of location.

“CHCC is not only improving efficiency behind the scenes but also creating a better and more consistent experience for our patients, whether they receive care at the hospital, a clinic, or one of our outer island health centers,” said Dr. John Tudela, Chief Medical Officer at CHCC.

The Expanse platform includes advanced safety features for accurate medication management and real-time alerts that support clinicians in responding quickly to changes in a patient’s condition. Its AI-driven decision support and predictive analytics tools are expected to enhance early detection of high-risk conditions and expedite treatment planning.

“For us, this isn’t just about technology—it’s about taking better care of our people,” said Esther L. Muña, CEO of CHCC. “We know how important it is for our families to get the right care without delays or confusion. Expanse will help our doctors and nurses see the full picture, so they can spend more time with patients and less time chasing down records.”

In addition to improving care coordination and access, CHCC will use Expanse to better manage chronic and complex conditions such as diabetes and cancer. The platform’s data analytics capabilities will play a key role in tracking public health trends and outcomes, including the effectiveness of tobacco cessation programs, a vital focus given that 68% of the region’s cancer cases are linked to tobacco use.

“We’re making it easier for families across Saipan, Tinian, and Rota to get connected and consistent care no matter where they go,” said Bel Busby, CHCC’s Director of Health Information Technology. “Our goal is to ensure every patient feels seen, supported, and safe every step of the way.”

Gina Kerley, Executive Director at MEDITECH, welcomed the partnership, saying, “We are proud to support CHCC’s vision for accessible, equitable, and patient-centered care. Together, we are creating a healthcare experience that prioritizes outcomes and enhances the lives of those served by the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation.”
