Martin A. Makary, M.D., M.P.H., a prominent surgeon-scientist and health policy expert, has been sworn in as the 27th Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. His appointment was confirmed by a bipartisan vote in the U.S. Senate.
Dr. Makary, known for his extensive work in surgical outcomes, health policy, and patient safety, was welcomed by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who praised his “impeccable credentials” and national leadership in medicine.
A professor and former endowed chair at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Makary has authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles and co-developed the widely used surgical safety checklist. His research spans cancer care, antimicrobial resistance, and Alzheimer’s disease.
In his remarks, Dr. Makary expressed gratitude and a commitment to science, transparency, and public health. “I look forward to working with this Administration to Make America Healthy Again,” he said.
Dr. Makary holds degrees from Bucknell University, Thomas Jefferson University, and the Harvard School of Public Health.
