Framingham, Mass. & Cork, Ireland — Ameresco, Inc., a leading energy solutions provider, has received approval from Ireland’s An Bord Pleanála to upgrade turbines at the Kilvinane Wind Farm in County Cork, a move set to boost renewable energy production and strengthen the country’s electricity grid.
Through its Irish subsidiary, Cork Sustainable Energy Limited (CSEL), Ameresco manages the Kilvinane Wind Farm located eight kilometers east of Dunmanway. The site, which features three turbines, will produce approximately 8,500 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity annually once the upgrades are complete—enough to power thousands of homes and businesses while supporting Ireland’s broader climate and energy targets.
“The upgrade will ensure the efficient operation of the wind farm and contribute to Ireland’s ambitious renewable energy goals,” said Mark Apsey MBE, Senior Vice President for the UK and Ireland at Ameresco. “This decision provides clarity and certainty for wind farm operators in Ireland, and we are excited to move forward.”
Ireland ranks as the second-largest producer of wind energy in the world in terms of the percentage of electricity generated from wind. The approval from An Bord Pleanála was granted on the basis that the proposed upgrades align with the character of the existing structures and surrounding area. The decision also establishes a precedent for the planning treatment of routine wind farm maintenance activities.
As Ireland accelerates its transition to clean energy, projects like the Kilvinane Wind Farm play a key role in reinforcing the nation’s energy independence and sustainability. Ameresco’s continued investment in the region underscores its commitment to advancing renewable infrastructure across Europe.
