Boston–  Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is marking National Bike Month and Mental Health Awareness Month with its largest-ever Bluebikes credit offer: a free $50 ride credit available to users throughout May.

The state’s largest health insurer, which serves as the title sponsor of the Bluebikes bike-share program, is funding the initiative to encourage more residents to experience the physical and mental health benefits of cycling. The credit can be redeemed by entering the code BLUECROSSMABIKE in the “Rewards” section of the Bluebikes app and will remain valid through December 31, 2025. Supplies are limited.

The $50 credit can be used for both pedal and electric bikes across Bluebikes’ 500 stations spanning 13 eastern Massachusetts communities, including Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, and Salem.

“Biking supports physical and mental well-being, helps reduce carbon emissions, and builds stronger community connections,” said Jeff Bellows, Vice President of Corporate Citizenship and Public Affairs at Blue Cross. “We hope this initiative helps more people discover the power of a simple ride.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity like cycling can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers, while also improving sleep and reducing anxiety.

Bluebikes, which is municipally owned and operated by Lyft, has been supported by Blue Cross since 2018. Since its launch, the system has recorded over 25 million rides and logged more than 56 million miles. It also offers an income-eligible program to ensure affordable access to sustainable transportation.

The initiative reflects Blue Cross’ ongoing commitment to building healthier, more connected communities through wellness and accessibility.
