ARLINGTON, Va.– Health insurance giant Cigna has added Kerecis’ fish-skin graft products to its medical coverage policy, significantly expanding access to the innovative treatment for patients with diabetic foot ulcers.

Kerecis, known for pioneering the use of sustainably sourced intact fish skin in regenerative medicine, announced the update this week. With Cigna’s inclusion, nearly 200 million Americans are now covered under insurance plans that recognize fish-skin grafts as a medically necessary option for managing chronic wounds.

The coverage applies to patients whose diabetic foot ulcers have not healed with conventional treatments and meet specific clinical guidelines. Kerecis’ MariGen® and Shield® product lines are among those now eligible for reimbursement under the new policy.

“Access is a critical part of improving outcomes in chronic wound care,” said Fertram Sigurjonsson, Founder and CEO of Kerecis. “We are pleased that Cigna recognizes the clinical value of our technology and that more patients can now benefit from regenerative fish skin as part of their treatment options.”

Cigna joins a growing number of national and regional insurers that support the use of fish-skin grafts in wound care, bolstering Kerecis’ position in the U.S. market as it continues to expand the reach of its sustainable, biologically active products.
