São Paulo, Brazil / Chelmsford, MA — A.C. Camargo Cancer Center has installed more than 2,000 high-tech video surveillance cameras throughout its facilities in partnership with Axis Communications, enhancing both security and patient care while generating over $2 million in savings during the first two years of implementation.

The comprehensive camera system, deployed across corridors, care units, surgical centers, and parking areas, reflects a broader effort to improve safety for the 100,000 patients treated annually and nearly 6,000 staff members working at the Center. The system also plays a role in identifying operational issues and improving clinical response.

“We’re using this technology not just to protect assets, but to strengthen the entire care experience,” said William de Souza, Corporate Manager at A.C. Camargo. “By monitoring everything from surgical units to public areas, our staff can react faster and more effectively to both medical and safety concerns.”

The cameras, equipped with analytics capabilities, help detect issues like power outages, nitrogen leaks, and suspicious behavior. The system also assists with fall detection and can identify patients or visitors in distress—helping medical teams intervene when necessary. In parking areas, the system automatically tracks vehicle access to improve traffic flow and manage security.

Initially launched with 300 cameras, the project quickly scaled to over 2,100 devices across the seven-building complex. The integration has enabled the hospital to meet several regulatory standards while reinvesting savings into cancer treatment and research.

Carlos Machado of Axis Communications said the partnership demonstrates how technology can support high-quality care. “A.C. Camargo has shown how modern security tools can go beyond protection and actively support patient outcomes,” he said.

The Center, a global leader in oncology care since its founding in 1953, plans to continue expanding the use of smart surveillance tools as part of its broader commitment to innovation and operational excellence.
