Phoenix– Spectrum Medical Care Center has named Dr. Howard Grossman as its new medical director, bringing one of the nation’s leading voices in LGBTQ+ health and HIV care to the forefront of its clinical leadership.

Dr. Grossman, a board-certified internist, is widely known for his pioneering work in HIV medicine and for establishing the country’s first private primary care practice focused exclusively on LGBTQ+ patients. His decades-long career has spanned clinical care, public health advocacy, and healthcare leadership, making him a prominent figure in advancing equitable care for marginalized communities.

“We enthusiastically welcome Dr. Grossman to Spectrum Medical,” said Dr. Thanis Vanig, the center’s founder. “He and I share a deep-rooted commitment to combining medical excellence with community-centered care—especially from our early days on the frontlines of the HIV epidemic.”

Most recently, Grossman helped grow the primary care clinic at The LGBTQ Center of Southern Nevada. He has also held leadership roles at Archwell Health, Howard Brown Health in Chicago, and Midway Specialty Care in Florida. His work has included serving as Executive Director of the American Academy of HIV Medicine, where he led more than 2,000 frontline providers, and contributing to clinical research at Fenway Community Health in Boston.

Dr. Grossman’s appointment comes as Spectrum Medical looks to expand its primary care offerings and deepen its commitment to inclusive, patient-centered care.

“I’m honored to join a team that truly understands and responds to the needs of LGBTQ+ patients,” Grossman said. “My approach is rooted in experience, but it’s also about partnership. Patients should feel safe, heard, and respected. That’s what healthcare should be.”

Grossman is a graduate of Haverford College and SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. He completed his residency at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn during the early years of the AIDS crisis, an experience that helped shape his lifelong dedication to HIV care and advocacy.

“Caring for LGBTQ+ patients isn’t just about prescriptions—it’s about respect, trust, and creating a space where individuals can speak freely and access care tailored to who they are,” he said.

His arrival marks a significant milestone for Spectrum Medical as it continues to build a healthcare environment grounded in compassion, inclusion, and medical expertise.
