KYOTO, Japan — Murata Manufacturing has launched mass production of what it says is the world’s first 47μF multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) in the compact 0402-inch (1.0 × 0.5 mm) size, targeting high-performance electronics with space and heat constraints.

The new capacitors are intended for use in densely packed devices like AI servers and data centers, where heat and limited circuit board space create challenges for engineers. With this development, Murata is aiming to meet the growing demand for components that combine miniaturization, high capacitance, and thermal reliability.

By leveraging proprietary materials and internal electrode miniaturization technologies, Murata has reduced the mounting area by about 60% compared to its existing 0603-inch MLCC with the same 47μF rating. The company also reports that this new version provides more than double the capacitance of its 22μF 0402-sized product.

The new MLCCs are offered in two variants:

  • X5R (GRM158R60E476ME01): Suitable for temperatures between -55°C and +85°C.

  • X6S (GRM158C80E476ME01): Supports up to +105°C, making it suitable for use near high-heat components like integrated circuits.

Both variants come with a rated voltage of 2.5Vdc and a ±20% capacitance tolerance.

Murata says this advancement reflects its ongoing effort to produce smaller, higher-capacity components that not only improve electronic device design but also promote more efficient manufacturing and reduced environmental impact through lower material use and energy consumption.
