EAST LANSING, Mich.– Dr. James D. Thomas has been elected President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), the organization announced Friday. A board-certified emergency physician, Dr. Thomas practices at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, Massachusetts, and has served as an ABEM oral examiner for over two decades.
“Becoming President of ABEM is an honor,” said Dr. Thomas. “It is a privilege to help practicing emergency physicians maintain the highest standards and ensure quality care for each and every person in need. I am excited for the year ahead—to grow and develop ABEM’s initiatives and the future of certification.”
Dr. Thomas earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed his residency at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio.

Dr. Felix K. Ankel, President-Elect – Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Minnesota and faculty member at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul.

Dr. Yvette Calderón, Secretary-Treasurer – Chair of Emergency Medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, and Emergency Medicine Clinical Lead at Jefferson Health in Philadelphia.

Dr. Diane L. Gorgas, Immediate Past President – Vice Chair of Academic Affairs and Executive Director of Global Health at The Ohio State University.

Dr. Kim M. Feldhaus, At-Large Member – Attending emergency physician at Boulder Community Health in Colorado.

Dr. Suzanne R. White, At-Large Member – Professor at Wayne State University and attending physician at John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit.
All members of the ABEM Board are actively practicing emergency physicians. The Board emphasized its ongoing commitment to advancing the specialty and supporting high standards in emergency medical care.
