BOSTON– The Termeer Institute announced Monday that Catharine Smith has been appointed Chief Executive Officer, formalizing her leadership role at the organization dedicated to advancing life sciences leadership and honoring the legacy of biotech pioneer Henri A. Termeer.

Smith, who has served as the Institute’s executive director since 2021, has overseen a period of significant growth, including expansion of the Termeer Fellows Program, development of a wider mentorship network, and strengthened partnerships across academia, industry, and nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and internationally.

“Catharine has led our work with integrity, vision, and deep commitment to our mission,” said Belinda Termeer, president and co-founder of the Termeer Institute and a member of its board of directors. “As CEO, we are confident that Catharine will lead the Institute toward its vision for the next generation of global, purpose-driven biotech leaders and faster cures for patients.”

The Institute was established to identify, support, and empower biotech leaders capable of delivering transformative treatments.

Smith said the appointment reflects not just her career, but the future of the organization. “Leading this work has been the privilege of my career,” she said. “This moment is about the work ahead: supporting leaders who are responsible not only for scientific excellence, but also for creating an ecosystem defined by humility, responsibility, innovation, passion, and connection. Our vision is a global community where every patient has a cure, and we are committed to building the leadership capacity that will make that vision a reality.”
