WALTHAM, Mass. — Wolters Kluwer Health announced the first in a series of planned enhancements to its generative AI clinical decision support platform, UpToDate Expert AI. Comprehensive medication content from UpToDate Lexidrug, a drug reference resource relied upon by clinicians, pharmacists and hospital pharmacies, is now integrated into the AI tool to strengthen medication and therapeutic decision support.

“Since we launched UpToDate Expert AI in September, we have been working with more than 50 major U.S. health systems to deploy UpToDate Expert AI enterprise wide. The response clearly demonstrates clinicians and healthcare enterprises want GenAI-delivered medical information built on evidence-based content and functionality that is vetted by experts in the loop,” said Yaw Fellin, SVP and General Manager, Clinical Decision Support and Provider Solutions at Wolters Kluwer Health.

Nearly one-third of all clinician questions in traditional UpToDate are drug-related. With this expanded integration, users of UpToDate Expert AI now have access to approximately 3,000 curated drug topics in the areas most requested by clinicians. The material is written and maintained by the pharmacists and clinical specialists behind UpToDate Lexidrug and is harmonized with UpToDate’s broader evidence-based content to support generative answers that avoid inconsistencies found in internet sources.

Clinicians can ask natural language questions about medications, including scenarios such as contraception requirements for patients taking Arava, comparative QTc prolongation risks between risperidone and aripiprazole, or which medications among allopurinol, spironolactone and lisinopril may be causing gynecomastia.

Fellin added, “This is one of several expansions and enhancements in our roadmap for UpToDate Expert AI. For example, in addition to continuously enhancing speed and usability, we know there is interest in more drug information at point-of-care. Doctors, nurses and health leaders are our north star, and we’ll continue to iterate and enhance based on the feedback and excitement they share.”
