CANTON, Mass. — MEDITECH said its Expanse electronic health record system is now live across 43 hospitals within the HCA Healthcare network, marking the first large-scale wave of the provider’s enterprise-wide EHR implementation.
The milestone represents a key step in HCA Healthcare’s multi-year effort to establish a unified, cloud-based digital foundation to support consistent, data-driven care delivery across its system. HCA Healthcare is one of the nation’s largest healthcare providers, operating 191 hospitals and approximately 2,500 care sites across 20 U.S. states and the United Kingdom.
Built on a cloud-based architecture and designed with a mobile-friendly interface, MEDITECH Expanse provides clinicians with personalized workflows, embedded clinical decision support, and artificial intelligence capabilities aimed at improving safety, quality, and efficiency across care settings.
“Expanse represents more than a technology upgrade, it is a key step in how we deliver care for the patients and communities we serve,” said Jake O’Shea, vice president and chief health information officer at HCA Healthcare. “We believe Expanse will help our efforts to integrate data more seamlessly, enhance clinical decision support and improve the adoption of future digital and AI innovations across HCA Healthcare.”
HCA Healthcare said the implementation builds on its role as a learning health system, using de-identified data from approximately 44 million patient encounters each year to drive continuous improvement. The Expanse platform is intended to strengthen this approach by enabling more connected and data-driven clinical practices.
The rollout is part of a broader, multi-year agreement to deploy MEDITECH Expanse across additional HCA Healthcare facilities, extending a collaboration between the two organizations that spans more than three decades.
“We are honored that HCA Healthcare has continued to look to MEDITECH as a long-term partner, a decision reflecting the deep trust in our collaboration,” said Helen Waters, executive vice president and chief operating officer at MEDITECH. “The milestone of 43 live facilities is a clear testament to the extraordinary teamwork and shared commitment across both our organizations. We are excited to continue building on this success.”
HCA Healthcare said it plans to roll out Expanse across additional waves of hospitals in the coming months. The organization is also working with MEDITECH and other technology partners to develop and scale clinician-trusted AI solutions designed to return more time to patient care and improve the overall patient experience.
