SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Viz.ai announced that it has appointed Tim Showalter, MD, MPH, MBA, as its first chief medical officer, marking a key step as the company expands its artificial intelligence platform into new disease areas beyond its initial focus on acute care.

Showalter, an academic radiation oncologist with more than 15 years of experience spanning oncology diagnostics, AI-driven health technology, and academic medicine, will lead Viz.ai’s clinical strategy and oversee the development of AI-assisted care pathways. He will report to Chris Mansi, MD, the company’s chief executive officer and co-founder.

“Tim’s unique combination of clinical excellence, deep AI and oncology experience, and proven success in translating innovation into clinical impact make him the perfect clinician to deliver on the broad applicability of the Viz.ai Platform,” Mansi said. “As Viz expands its clinical footprint into oncology, pulmonology and other areas, Tim’s leadership will help ensure that our portfolio of products continues to deliver meaningful clinical and financial outcomes for patients, health systems and our life science partners.”

Most recently, Showalter served as chief medical officer at Artera AI, where he helped advance AI-based biomarkers for personalized cancer care, including work on the first digital pathology AI test to receive FDA clearance and inclusion in national clinical guidelines. Earlier in his career, he founded Advaray, a radiation therapy device company that developed BrachyGelTM, which later received FDA clearance before the company was acquired by CQ Medical.

In his new role, Showalter will also guide Viz.ai’s strategic collaborations with life sciences companies, health systems, and professional societies, with a focus on expanding evidence generation and supporting real-world clinical adoption of AI technologies across additional disease areas.

“I am honored to join Viz.ai at this inflection point for its growth,” Showalter said. “Viz has already redefined how AI can be combined with care coordination to accelerate patient care and improve outcomes for acute medical conditions. I look forward to building on that foundation to bring transformative, data-driven solutions to more diseases to improve the lives of patients worldwide who face complex conditions, and to better support the clinicians who serve them.”

Showalter is a professor of radiation oncology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he continues to practice clinically on a part-time basis. He has co-authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications, led National Institutes of Health–funded research, and was named the University of Virginia’s Edlich-Henderson Innovator of the Year in 2023. He previously held leadership roles at both the University of Virginia and Flatiron Health.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia, a master of public health degree from Johns Hopkins University, and a master of business administration degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
