BOSTON, Mass. — LightSpun, an AI-powered dental insurance administration platform supporting more than 175,000 providers nationwide, has partnered with Smile America Partners to accelerate dentist enrollment and expand access to care for underserved children across the U.S.
Smile America Partners operates the nation’s largest school-based mobile and portable dental program, delivering preventive services, screenings, and treatment to more than 500,000 children annually in over 8,000 schools. The organization focuses on low-income and rural communities, where cost and access barriers often delay or prevent care.
Dental care remains one of the most significant unmet health needs among American children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, students miss more than 34 million school hours each year due to acute or unplanned dental issues.
By providing treatment directly on school campuses, Smile America aims to reduce those disruptions. But expanding into new communities has been slowed by administrative hurdles. Enrolling a dentist with insurance companies typically takes 45 to 60 days, and delays can push approvals into the next academic term, limiting how quickly providers can begin treating children.
LightSpun’s platform uses artificial intelligence to automate the credentialing and enrollment process, reducing errors and helping ensure applications meet insurance requirements before submission. The company said the technology can cut enrollment timelines from months to weeks or even days.
Through LightSpun’s partnership with the American Dental Association, Smile America Partners will use standardized, AI-driven credentialing tools designed to maintain compliance and quality standards while accelerating approvals.
“Credentialing compliance directly impacts when children receive care,” said Steve Higginbotham, CEO of Smile America Partners. “LightSpun’s platform helps our team submit error-free applications that meet insurance requirements the first time. That means providers get approved faster and we can expand to new communities while ensuring compliance.”
The partnership comes as healthcare providers face mounting pressure to modernize administrative systems. The 2025 CAQH Index identified $21 billion in potential savings if providers eliminate manual workflows. At the same time, new state laws require dental insurers to spend at least 83 percent of premium revenue on patient care rather than administrative overhead.
“Smile America is tackling a critical access challenge for underserved children. However, their ability to serve new schools and communities is slowed down by back-office credentialing timelines,” said Shaju Puthussery, CEO and Co-Founder of LightSpun. “LightSpun automates this process, enabling provider onboarding in weeks instead of months. This means a greater percentage of funding goes directly toward treatment, with fewer dollars spent on back-office rework.”
