PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga.– Siemens is the first company to successfully receive UL listing for a 120-volt, single pole solid-state circuit breaker.

The solid-state breaker concept replaces the traditional moving parts of an electromechanical circuit breaker with semiconductors and advanced software algorithms that control the power and can interrupt extreme currents faster than ever before.

Because the basis of the new product is electronic, the speed and programmability of power distribution and management are entering a new era. Fully digital power has the potential to improve safety, reliability, and product customization more than current electrical management systems. Users have new abilities to understand and manage the consumption, safety, and application of electricity.

“This is an exciting step forward in making solid-state circuit breaker technology available to the mainstream market,” says Barry Powell, Head of Electrical Products North America for Siemens Smart Infrastructure. “It makes electricity safer by dramatically reducing arc flash hazards, and more manageable with the remote control and operation of individual electrical circuits.”

Heat generation is inherent to semiconductor-based products. This new Siemens device is also the first UL listed solid-state breaker that operates with passive heat management, meaning it does not require any special panels or equipment. It is designed for use in standard electrical panels.

“In addition to the advancements in circuit protection capabilities, Siemens has been able to design this new breaker using fully recyclable materials that are not commonly found in traditional circuit breakers,” Powell adds. “This is part of Siemens’ continued commitment to the sustainability of electrical distribution.”

Siemens has been involved in solid-state circuit breaker technology for many years with organic developments, partnerships, and investments both domestically and internationally. Today’s announcement represents the first solid-state circuit breaker fully developed by Siemens in the United States.

These devices are designed for use in 120-volt, single pole residential, commercial, and light industrial applications. Over the coming months and years, Siemens will continue to develop new features and capabilities of this product family.
