SAN CARLOS, Calif. — ZAP Surgical Systems, Inc. has reached a major milestone with the treatment of its 5,000th patient using the ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® platform, a non-invasive brain surgery technology. The landmark case took place at Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, N.J.
The patient, Christopher Czerwinski, a 64-year-old trauma and ICU nurse, was treated for a right-sided cavernous sinus meningioma. After first experiencing double vision two years ago, Czerwinski was diagnosed following an MRI. He chose Jersey Shore University Medical Center for its expertise and the capabilities of the ZAP-X system, undergoing treatment without complications and resuming his active lifestyle immediately.
“Stereotactic radiosurgery continues to redefine how we manage challenging cranial conditions,” said Dr. Shabbar F. Danish, chair of neurosurgery at the institute. “With the precision and versatility of ZAP-X, we can deliver focused treatment while preserving quality of life.”
The ZAP-X platform uses gyroscopic beam delivery to direct radiation from thousands of angles, concentrating dose on the tumor while sparing healthy tissue and protecting nearby critical structures such as the optic nerves and brainstem. The painless, incision-free procedure is typically completed in one outpatient session without anesthesia or hospital admission.
ZAP Surgical founder and CEO Dr. John R. Adler called the 5,000th treatment “a reaffirmation of our mission to make brain radiosurgery safer, smarter, and more accessible.” Unlike cobalt-based systems, ZAP-X uses a linear accelerator to generate radiation and is the only vault-free dedicated cranial SRS platform, allowing installation in a wider range of clinical settings.
Kenneth N. Sable, M.D., president of Hackensack Meridian Health’s Acute Hospital Division, said the milestone was especially meaningful because the patient was from the local community, reflecting the health system’s goal of expanding access to cutting-edge treatments close to home.
