BOSTON – Teledyne FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY), announced it has received an order from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for 15 Griffin G510x portable chemical detectors designed to identify explosives and narcotics, including fentanyl and nitazenes, in less than five minutes.

The Griffin G510x systems will be deployed nationwide under CBP’s Laboratory and Scientific Services program to enhance frontline detection capabilities. The devices are engineered to analyze complex drug mixtures and can confirm the presence of trace narcotics—such as fentanyl in extremely low concentrations—even when masked by other substances and cutting agents, where conventional portable devices often fail. Teledyne FLIR Defense expects to deliver all units later this month.

“Drugs like fentanyl remain a deadly threat and drain on our country, consuming lives and resources across America,” said Dr. JihFen Lei, President of Teledyne FLIR Defense. “We are proud to support U.S. Customs and Border Protection in their efforts to control drug trafficking by providing the G510x—a powerful tool that can quickly identify narcotics in the field, enhance investigations, and help law enforcement get these dangers off our streets.”

The Griffin G510x is a portable gas chromatograph–mass spectrometer (GC-MS) that delivers rapid, laboratory-grade chemical identification in the field. It includes an onboard SWGDrug database that compares field samples against more than 3,500 illicit drugs, metabolites, and compounds, with regular updates to address emerging threats.

Last year, more than 100,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, with over three-quarters of those deaths linked to opioids. Given the extreme potency of fentanyl, even microscopic amounts can be fatal. The G510x offers law enforcement a crucial advantage in identifying and confirming such substances quickly and accurately.

The Griffin G510x is designed and manufactured at Teledyne FLIR Defense’s facilities in West Lafayette, Indiana.
