BALTIMORE, Md. — Medifast said its OPTAVIA metabolic health program is now eligible for reimbursement through Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts on select insurance plans, expanding access to its science-backed weight and metabolic health system for qualifying clients.
The company said eligible participants may be able to reduce program costs by as much as 40 percent by using pre-tax medical funds in coordination with their healthcare provider and insurance administrator. Medifast described the move as a significant step toward making metabolic health solutions more accessible to individuals seeking to address metabolic dysfunction.
According to the company, more than 90 percent of U.S. adults are considered metabolically unhealthy, a condition associated with increased risk for chronic disease. Medifast said OPTAVIA is designed to address the underlying drivers of metabolic dysfunction by combining a structured nutrition system with coaching support.
“This is a major moment for our company, and more importantly, for the millions of people across the U.S. seeking solutions for improving their health,” said Nicholas Johnson, president of Medifast. “With OPTAVIA’s metabolic health system available on select insurance plans using HSA and FSA funds, we’re encouraging more people to access the innovative tools and science-backed solutions they need to help promote metabolic health.”
Medifast said the program is built around its Metabolic Synchronization approach, which focuses on improving metabolic function through healthy weight loss, reduction of visceral fat, preservation of lean mass, and protection of muscle.
“Our science-backed solutions achieve more than just weight loss,” said Dr. Satya Jonnalagadda, vice president of scientific and clinical affairs at Medifast. “They improve body composition by reducing visceral fat, preserving lean mass, and protecting healthy muscle, which are critical to restoring metabolic balance.”
Looking ahead, Medifast said it plans to launch a new system in 2026 that will incorporate products containing clinically studied ingredients intended to further support metabolic health. The company said the planned launch reflects its ongoing strategy to expand offerings that support long-term health across different stages of an individual’s wellness journey.
